One of the main obstacles people run into when beginning or sustaining any fitness journey is staying motivated.
I usually get a call or email when a potential client is raring with motivation–they are full of energy and want to know how to get started–like yesterday.
And here’s the thing to remember about reaching your fitness goals–a mood will get you started, but discipline and habit is what keeps you on the right path.
We’ve all had those inspirational moods when we feel like we can take over the world–we imagine ourselves where we want to be physically and decide it’s time.
Here are a few things I suggest writing down when you feel truly motivated to begin your fitness journey:
- What will I look and feel like when I reach my goal? (Lose 20 pounds? Toned and strong? Energetic and joyful?)
- What are my compelling reasons for sticking to my workout and diet plan when things get hard? (To show my kids a healthy lifestyle?)
- What affirmation can I refer back to when I want to quit? (Ex: I am strong, disciplined, and capable of reaching my dreams).
Getting specific when answering these questions will help keep you on track when motivation wanes. We have to have compelling, meaningful reasons to do what we do, or self-will will fail us.
So: here’s the secret to remember:
Motivation will get you started, habit and discipline will keep you going.
If you know and accept this, you won’t wait until you feel like being healthy or working out.
